Respiratory System Essentials
Overview
The respiratory system facilitates the exchange of gases between the atmosphere and the blood. It consists of the conducting zone which warms and filters air, and the respiratory zone where gas exchange occurs. Nursing focus is on maintaining airway patency and ensuring adequate oxygenation of tissues.
Key nursing concepts
- Structure of the upper and lower respiratory tracts.
- Mechanism of ventilation involving pressure changes.
- External respiration at the alveolar-capillary membrane.
- Transport of oxygen via hemoglobin in the blood.
- Regulation of breathing by chemical and neural signals.
- Acid-base balance maintained by carbon dioxide excretion.
Important nursing considerations
- Monitor respiratory rate and depth frequently for signs of distress.
- Assess oxygen saturation using pulse oximetry as a fifth vital sign.
- Auscultate lung sounds in all lobes to identify adventitious breath sounds.
- Observe for use of accessory muscles during breathing.
- Position patients in high-Fowlers to maximize lung expansion.
- Check arterial blood gas results for pH and carbon dioxide levels.
Patient teaching
- Demonstrate the use of an incentive spirometer to prevent atelectasis.
- Instruct on the importance of smoking cessation for lung health.
- Teach pursed-lip breathing to manage shortness of breath.
- Explain the need for adequate hydration to thin respiratory secretions.
