Leadership
Conflict Management Strategies
Overview
Conflict management is the process of recognizing and resolving disputes in a professional manner. In nursing, conflict can arise between staff, with patients, or between departments, potentially impacting care quality. Nurses must use effective communication strategies to de-escalate tension and reach a resolution.
Key nursing concepts
- Intrapersonal conflict occurs within an individual nurse.
- Interpersonal conflict occurs between two or more people.
- Intergroup conflict occurs between departments or shifts.
- Avoiding is a lose-lose strategy where the conflict remains.
- Collaboration is a win-win strategy requiring open communication.
- Compromising is a lose-lose or win-lose where both give something up.
Important nursing considerations
- Identify the root cause of the conflict before intervening.
- Encourage the parties to use 'I' statements to express feelings.
- Focus on the issue rather than the personalities involved.
- Aim for a win-win solution through collaboration when possible.
- Address horizontal violence or bullying immediately to maintain safety.
Patient teaching
- Teach staff the steps of the DESC script for conflict resolution.
- Instruct on the impact of lateral violence on team morale.
- Encourage early reporting of workplace harassment or bullying.
