Pain Management and Comfort
Overview
Pain management is a critical component of nursing care, focusing on the assessment and relief of physical suffering. Because pain is a subjective experience, the patient's self-report is the most reliable indicator. Effective management combines pharmacological treatments with non-pharmacological comfort measures to improve quality of life.
Key nursing concepts
- Pain is subjective and whatever the experiencing person says it is.
- Acute pain is protective and short-term; chronic pain is non-protective.
- Nociceptive pain arises from tissue damage; neuropathic from nerve damage.
- The Gate Control Theory explains how non-painful stimuli can block pain.
- Patient-Controlled Analgesia (PCA) allows patients to self-manage pain safely.
- Pain assessment includes location, quality, intensity, and duration.
Important nursing considerations
- Assess the patient's pain level using a 0-10 scale before and after meds.
- Monitor respiratory rate when administering opioid analgesics.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions like heat/cold.
- Watch for side effects of pain medication, such as constipation or nausea.
- Consider the patient's cultural background and its impact on pain expression.
- Maintain a quiet environment to enhance the effect of pain management.
Patient teaching
- Teach the patient how to use the pain scale to communicate needs.
- Instruct the patient to request pain medication before the pain becomes severe.
- Explain the importance of reporting side effects like itching or drowsiness.
- Encourage the use of complementary therapies like deep breathing.
